Brown & Caldwell Case Study | Red Arrow Software Architects

Case Studies

Brown & Caldwell - OMSConnect

Overview: A large environmental consulting company wanted to update a software product they used as part of a service for large clients. Their existing solution did not scale to large data sets or high traffic and they preferred to outsource software development and focus on their core business. The first company they chose produced a solution based on an existing framework that was not well suited to the task and the resulting application was difficult to use.

Outcome: Red Arrow produced an easy-to-use, scalable web-based content management system that looked and operated exactly the same way as the client’s legacy product. In addition to scaling easily to large datasets and more users, the new application can be easily hosted, leading to new business opportunities.

Then
Plant operators and admnistrators use the electronic operations manual to replace difficult-to-maintain, update and replicate paper manuals, binders and posters. Annotations allow capture of “wisdom” and experience to other employees.
Now
Our client specifically requested that the prior user interface and experience be precisely duplicated. The new infrastructure makes future changes easier to implement.
Then
Digital workflow built into the systems automates checking out, editing, approving and publishing content. A detailed permissions model and tracking system provides detailed auditing capability.
Now
As with the client user experience, the process and workflow remains the same.
Then
Operating data is stored in a database, indexed, linked and made available electronically. Data can be annotated, and the annotations stored. Image maps are simple to create and make data accessible visually. A table of contents makes traditional navigation simple as well.
Now
Information is stored in SQLServer and accessed through our Ignition Framework making future integration efforts with enterprise applications easier to implement.
Then
The legacy application required heavy customization for each customer and did not scale well to large datasets or multiple users.
Now
The application is written in .Net MVC and runs on IIS7 and Microsoft SQL Server 2008. Modular construction and easy “skinnability” drastically reduce the time required to tweak the application for each customer.
